International Shakespeare troupe returning to Rice Feb 2-4

HOUSTON – (Jan. 9, 2023) – “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, / My love as deep; the more I give to thee,” proclaims Juliet in William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy “Romeo and Juliet,” as she describes her feelings. The world-acclaimed Actors From The London Stage are bringing the tragic tale of the star-crossed lovers and their warring families to life at Rice University in their first visit to campus in four years.

The international touring theater troupe based in London and at the University of Notre Dame will be in residency at Rice Jan. 31-Feb. 4. The troupe will perform “Romeo and Juliet” at Hamman Hall on campus at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2-4.

Founded by famed actor Patrick Stewart, the troupe is in its 47th year. Beginning as an educational program developed by Homer Swander at the University of California, Santa Barbara, today it tours up to 20 universities each year to provide communities, students and faculty an opportunity to experience dynamic and enriching performing arts.

All roles in the Rice performances will be played by five veterans of classical theater: Grace Andrews, Kaffe Keating, Hilary Maclean, Jonathan Oldfield and Thomas Wingfield. They all hail from prestigious theater companies, including the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the West End Theatre and the Barbican Theatre, and have made numerous appearances in film and on BBC television.

The troupe’s residency is underwritten by the Alan and Shirley Grob Endowment for Shakespeare and the Grob Fund for Shakespeare in Performance, with additional support from Rice’s Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts and Department of English.

Tickets are $15 for Rice students, alumni, faculty and staff and senior citizens, $20 for general admission and $10 per person for groups of 10 and more. Tickets are available for reservation by emailing [email protected].
