Imperial Hangover? Memory, Representation and Culture in Portsmouth

This Wednesday (26 October), historians, social theorists, artists and writers from the University of Portsmouth will offer fresh and radical perspectives on our city as part of Black History Month.

Drs Tom Sykes, Louis Netter, Alison Habens, Marius Kwint and PhD candidate Sudip Sen will be discussing a range of topics including:

  • Place and street names that commemorate controversial historical events and personalities.

  • Marginalized and underrepresented communities, then and now.

  • ‘History from below’ of dissent, mutiny and protest against injustice and exploitation.

The free event is open to the public and takes place from 6pm in the University’s Eldon Building on Winston Churchill Avenue. Tickets and more information can be found on the University’s event page www.port.ac.uk/events
